Abstract Details (PID = P144)
Title:Embracing Uncertainty: Developing Student Investigations (P144)
Description:Student designed experiments can feel like a chaotic mess, even when the teacher is fully planned and the students are well prepared. The students will collect data that may or may not match the expectations of the lesson and the teacher is left picking up the pieces when the students are finished. In this session, participants will have the opportunity to discover reliable student investigations used in units developed by teachers and scientists at the University of Illinois and Indiana University. The materials along with an easy-to-follow set of routines can help teachers learn to embrace the uncertainty that comes along with frequent use of student designed investigations in the biology classroom. Come to this session and take-home lesson ideas for concepts like the properties of water, cellular respiration, environmental impacts on enzymes, photosynthesis, and microbial ecosystems.
